The artist Oliver Hangl, who operates on the interface between
theatre, film and visual arts using various audiovisual tools,
returns to the Viennese Gürtel beltway with his wireless
headphones thus creating an individual listening experience
in the public space.
The exceptional concert series ON EAR - this year in
its extended version with a three-part programme - is
presented for the third time.
Part1
In the first programme the glass cube on the median strip
of the Viennese Gürtel beltway near the intersection
Josefstädter Straße, which was designed by VALIE
EXPORT, is turned into a concert stage. While the bands and
solo musicians are playing live in the Kubus EXPORT, the sound
is only transmitted via wireless headphones, completely doing
without amps or loudspeakers. As preferably electronic musicians
are invited, the space in the cube remains silent. For the
audience outside the Kubus EXPORT the music becomes only audible
via the wireless headphones directly plugged to the listeners`
ears. Although the participants are submerged in the traffic
noise of the Gürtel beltway, they are all listening to
the same music.
After the concert the shared listening is split, because then
the participants can choose between a DJ set and the
soundtrack of a TV live transmission of a game of the football
world championships. Thus the dance floor is visually
divided into two groups - one of dancers and one of listeners.

Part 2
With GUERILLADISCO Oliver Hangl`s concept of the wireless
headphones disco becomes mobile in the public space. The duo
Oliver Hangl and FM4 DJ Kristian Davidek takes a discarded
but newly adapted all-wheel outside broadcast van as a basis.
The so-called "Guerilla bus" can be used anywhere
- and temporarily as a Discomobil
too - with its plug & play equipment and its complete
DJ equipment. Although the concept plays with the idea of
total independence from a given location, the broadcast van
will remain within the area of Gaudenzdorfer Platz/U4 Margaretengürtel.
As the club music in the headphones isn`t audible for outsiders`,
residents in the neighbourhood won`t complain about noise
exposure.
Due to the fact that one can receive two separate channels
via the wireless headphones, two DJ sets from different music
genres can be performed simultaneously. Depending on the channel
each participant selects, the dance floor is visually divided
into two groups.
KINO IM KOPF [Cinema in the Head] is cinema in the
headphones without a screen!
What is staged here is audio film versions of motion
pictures- with the peculiarity that they totally lack the
visual element. The audience will sit outdoors in the
public green space near Margaretengürtel/near Haydnpark
listening to the version for visually impaired people
of the original soundtrack. Thus the individually projected
images in the peoples minds can mix with the real ones
of Haydnpark,
which is merely a strip of public green space alongside the
Viennese Gürtel beltway. So parallels and overlaps may
arise, so that the real environment as such may appear as
a distinctive element of the mise-en-scène. Staged
fiction versus staged reality?
