The cultural association Mega 5 likes to stage its art events
at locations where one usually would not expect art, e.g.
in a public pool for children, on a boat on wheels or in
a display window of a shop that is out of business. This
shall enable a specific form of interaction between artists
and visitors in the public space which allows for involving
a part of the audience in the process of art production.
For the series of exhibitions titled 8 Positions on
8m²,
Mega 5 uses a mobile market stand of 8m² at the Brunnenmarkt
as a platform for staging various artistic interventions.
During the day this “showcase” is used for selling
food and drinks. In the night and during the winter break
it turns into an exhibition space. Then the roof is included
too, which is linked to the lower section by a spiral staircase
and can be used as both a stage or seating for the visitors.
The artistic projects of 8 Positions on 8m² focus on installations
or performances and have been conceived as interactive works
of art. The ten invited artists come from the fields of music
and performing arts/ fine arts, design and video. In their
works four positions refer to installations in the interior
of the market stand, the two others use the roof and the
street space of the neighborhood as spatial frames of their
works of art. |

Hermann Staudinger’s Epiphanie, AussenlinsenRotlicht by
2MC and plastic
punch - lichtpunsch by Rolf Laven and Sabine Grupe
place emphasis on changes of lighting in the showcase itself
and
the reinterpretation of the works brought about by the visual
changes. In the position Mozartkugeleisbananendöner
(MKEBD) by T.Ö.F the hackneyed clichés of
the Austrian and the Turkish cuisine are pieced together
in form
of a frosted dessert which has been served out of a refrigerator
featuring a revolving doner kebab spit.
The position vis-à-vis by Jan Machacek reflects on the role of surveillance
cameras in public space. A self-constructed helmet is used here where the images
of a camera which is fixed to the showcase are fed in; these images being the
only visual orientation for the person wearing it. Thematizing a play with writing
and voice, temporäre Schrei(b)stube by Didi Bruckmayr and Onno Ennoson featured
a performative veiling of the stand with calligraphied wallpaper
In the course of the realization of the project the planned
eight positions had to be reduced to six. Thus plastic punch
- lichtpunsch will be the last position,
which is opened on Nov 8 and can be viewed until the end of the year.
